Kuah Shopping
Kuah is Langkawi’s main town where everything happens. Business here is
blossoming and the shopping here is fantastic. Located where the jetty is, this is the first place visitors
and tourists arrive at by ferry, and it is the most convenient for last minute shopping before the ferries
depart for the mainland. Kuah town has the highest number of shopping
complexes.
Ever popular is the duty-free shopping, as the goods here are tax-free
which means they can be purchased for a very low price for the same quality as anywhere else off the island.
There is however a limit of how much alcohol and cigarettes you can bring back to the mainland with you,
which you will have to check at the shopping complexes or duty-free shops there. If you’re lucky, the customs
won’t go through your things in depth, but that is if you’re willing to take the
risk.
Also popular is handicrafts made by locals. They’re usually made out of
wood or coconut shells, which make good keepsakes and souvenirs to bring home to your family and friends.
There are also tonnes of beachwear available, from trendy sarongs to modest wraps to bright
bikinis!
Around the Kuah town centre you will be able to find mostly sundry
shops and you will be able to find cheaper duty free items here than at the shopping malls. Most of the shops
allow you to bargain for an even lower price, but most of them only sell alcohol, cigarettes and
confectionary.
The Saga Shopping Center is one of the most established shopping
centres in Langkawi, providing a range of household items and perishables such as wine, liquor, spirits,
beer, and confectionery. They also have a wide range of soft toys and things that kids would like. For the
avid gardener and house maker, ceramics and crystals can be found here too.
Then there is Teow Soon Huat which is a mega duty-free shopping mall
housing 60 outlets, 12 restaurants and a supermarket. Despite being at the fringes of the Kuah Town, this is
one of the most popular places to shop in Langkawi. You can find anything here and it is more family
oriented.
As for the biggest place to shop, that would be the Langkawi Fair
Shopping Mall which boasts a hundred individual shops and a supermarket cum departmental store. You can find
all sorts here, including mobile phones and whatnot. There even is a money changer
here.
For last minute shoppers, the Jetty Point Mall is the most popular
destination for those who forgot or didn’t have time to shop during their stay in Langkawi. Located at the
jetty, this is the most convenient place to shop as you leave the island. Apart from souvenirs and duty-free
goods, they have an array of F&B outlets including a KFC and even a Starbucks with wireless internet
connections.
