The
Island of Legends
Nestled beyond the lands
of Kedah is a magnificent island known for its beautiful white sands and azure sea. This island is known for its
many myths, legends and folklore telling of the story of how the island of Langkawi was formed. Some tales
mention the fight of giants, which created some of the mountains, and a popular legend of Mahsuri remains the
most famous, noting that her innocent death led to the island being cursed for seven generations. It is said
that by now, the curse had just been lifted and thus Langkawi is thriving.
The island got its name from an eagle, said
to have been carrying a limestone. Lang comes from the Malay word for eagle ‘helang’ and kawi comes from the
malay word for limestone ‘batu kawi’. Together it came to be Langkawi.
Langkawi is most famous for its tropical
beach holidays, with many locations and beaches to seek resonance at. The most popular beach on the island is
the Cenang beach, as it not only has the best entertainment spots, it also has the most convenient access to
shops, transportation, and is a short drive from the Kuah Jetty. All sorts of hotels, motels and inns can be
found here. Backpackers will find that the prices of lodging here can be very affordable. At the same time,
luxury holidaymakers will also be able to find the perfect holiday accommodation on the island.
The more private beaches are further away
and provide utter privacy, which make for the best holiday for one who is seeking a quiet or romantic time away
from the hustle and bustle of crowds. These parts of the islands are the Burau Bay, Pantai Kok, and Tanjung Rhu.
These areas have more upscale and luxurious hotels which can only serve anyone the best holiday in one location,
for a striking fee.
At Pantai Kok, the Oriental Village is a key
attraction, with oriental design and shopping to look forward to. The best part about the man-made village is
the cable car ride up to the Gunung Mat Cincang, where a spectacular view awaits the eye.
Tourists who have stayed on the Langkawi
Island have said to have felt like they were in a different country altogether! This is not only because of its
duty-free status where booze, cigarettes, and confectionery are cheap but because of the islanders’ attitudes
which are laid back and friendly. It makes everyone want to stay on in this paradise island and never go back to
the reality of city-life! It is truly a vacation to be enjoyed by all.
